Sasquatch-Sized Anticipation!

Posted by: lkorn on: February 25, 2008

Today is the day. The day, that is, that the line-up for Sasquatch! 2008 is announced. No word yet, but we’ve technically got another eleven or so hours. There are rumors that both The Cure and The Breeders are headlining, so I’m curious to see who follows. More information as is updated on the official site, and I’ll post an “Festival #” when the line-up is complete. The festival has been expanded to three days, which may be a strain on the pocketbook, but no doubt worth it; May 24 – 26, 2008.

For some odd reason, and although Sasquatch! seems to be a smaller festival than others, I hold it in very high regard and anticipate its Spring arrival more than many of the larger, more wider-known festivals in the country. It could be that the prices are smaller, the bands more varying, and, it seems a bit more personal, due, perhaps to its Western location and the happenstance of seeing many people one knows (where state flags are flown and flocked to – strangers no longer strangers).

And, here’s the initial artist line-up for Sasquatch! 2008:

R.E.M. / The Cure / The Flaming Lips U.F.O. Show / Death Cab For Cutie / Modest Mouse / M.I.A. / Flight Of The Conchords / Rodrigo Y Gabriela / Michael Franti & Spearhead / The Breeders / Built To Spill / The Hives / Tegan & Sara / The Presidents / Ghostland Observatory / Ozomatli / The New Pornographers / Blue Scholars / The National / The Kooks / Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks / Cold War Kids / Beirut / Rogue Wave / Okkervil River / Fleet Foxes / Kinski / Mates of State / Crudo (featuring Mike Patton & Dan The Automator) / Sera Cahoone / Battles / Destroyer / Dyme Def / The Blakes / Pela / Jamie Lidell / The Cops / Dengue Fever / Siberian / Say Hi / White Rabbits / David Bazan / The Little Ones / “Awesome” / Dead Confederate / The Heavenly States / 65daysofstatic / Grand Archives / Vince Mira with the Roy Kay Trio / Joshua Morrison / Throw Me The Statue / J. Tillman / Thao Nguyen with the Get Down Stay Down / The Cave Singers / Matt Costa / The Shaky Hands

I too love Sasq. This year may be the first year since my junior year of high school that I don’t attend b/c of school and other crap, but if the line-up rocks, I’ll most likely be there.

looking forward to this line-up. if it really is the cure and gang of four though, i’ll be disappointed. i like the cure ok, and disintegration was a freaking genius album, but their recent stuff isn’t too good imo, and i saw them live in ‘04 or ‘05 and it wasn’t all that great.

Really? That’s a bummer… Well, I suppose we’ll see soon enough.

hey, i found a playlist on nutsie.com, its got all the artists that got announced today in one streaming, free playlist. get on it.

enjoy…see you at the gorge!

^ Modest Mouse, M.I.A., Built to Spill, The Hives, Tegan and Sara, Ghostland Observatory, The New Pornographers, Beirut…

The line-up has it’s ups… But I’m not head over heels in love with it, yet.

awesome, i’ll be going to this. thanks for the updates!

who i’m REALLY excited for:

flaming lips/ m.i.a./ flight of the concords/ michael franti/ beirut/ CRUDO!/ battles

who i’m excited for:

stephen malkmus & the jicks/ blue scholars/ destroyer

who i’ll probably check out:

r.e.m/ the cure/ modest mouse/ rogue wave/ built to spill/ tegan & sara

i’ve heard good things about rodrigo y gabriela, i’ll have to listen to them soon. the other bands i either haven’t heard or don’t care about (death cab/ new pornographers, etc).

Have you heard Ghostland Observatory, Evan? They played ‘Squatch! last year, and were pretty great. You should check them out if you haven’t… If you have and aren’t fond of them, perhaps you should give them another listen….

nope, haven’t heard them, but i will definitely check them out…

Here’s an interview with Mike and Dan from last year that was recently posted: http://www.self-titledmag.com/2008/02/27/qa-with-crudo-interview-by-andrew-parks/#more-54

cool, thanks for the link. i’m trying to avoid reading anything about the crudo project though, i like being surprised by what patton does next. i have no idea what crudo will sound like, except that i think it’ll be more catchy/accessible since dan the automator’s involved. can’t wait for that show…

I’m having a little trouble understanding something about the Festival’s press this year…

“It’s the first time in the festival’s five-year history that more than a single day of music has been scheduled. The expanded festival is a big leap forward for an event that House of Blues Northwest and talent booker Adam Zacks have nurtured since 2002.”

Am I wrong in believing this untrue? Both 2006 and 2007 were multiday festivals, no?

lkorn you are right on-you may be looking at an old site, right now the site is down, so it’s possible that they put some wrong info on there as well. For at least the last 2 years it’s been a weekend.

people I’m jazzed to see (provided I can make it from Pittsburgh):

The Cure (partially to say that I’ve seen them) // M.I.A.//Okkervil River (amazing!)//Malkimus & Jicks//Crudo//Beirut//The National

I know they are constantly touring, but i can’t imagine that OZO won’t be fantastic in front of 40,000 people.

mcbain great to have you commenting on OP. You named most of the bands I’m interested in seeing, although I have to say that I’m a bit skeptical about The Cure… not sure why, just am.

What an unusual blog.

Thanks, I guess.

At least he didn’t say “What an unoriginal, mundane, down the straight-n-narrow blog”
